As I don’t have this buggy outdated version on my Mac anymore, I always have to patch the config. Man I had so much trouble with this as well, and I dont remember having this much trouble before. With every update of IntelliJ IDEA, I stumble over this: IDEA wants to run on Java Version 6. This issue is consistent, has been reported to the IntelliJ team also with regards to this. Run IntelliJ IDEA with actual Java version on OS X. Mac OS Catalina 10.15.3, JDK 13 (Open JDK 13.0.2), JavaFX 13 via Maven is the one mainly used, but have tested out JavaFX SDK 13.0.2 and JavaFX11.
